The British Terrier includes a number of variants including the Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Fox Terrier and Rat Terrier. The closely related Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier share many characteristics with each other apart from their markings which can be very different.
The Smooth Fox Terrier are becoming short on numbers with only 300 being registered with the Kennel Club in 2010 which puts them as a vulnerable breed when compared to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier which registered over 6000 in the same period.
The Wire Fox Terrier with their distinctive "Beard" fairs slightly better in the popularity stakes which maybe a result of the popularization of the breed after King Edward VII owned one.
Painting either of these breeds is a delight, if not a challenge as their temperaments make them very excitable, especially if you need to visit them to take photographs. The are, however, another example of a lovely dog and I hope to paint more Fox Terrier Pet Portraits in the future.
